Movement and sensory awareness are the primary ways children learn about themselves and their world. They internalise movement before making connections to language. For example; a child moves up and down before learning the words up and down. As the vocabulary emerges, the movement is still linked to the language.

The last several decades have produced lifestyles where movement development has not kept pace with cognitive development. Children spend a vast amount of time either being carried or in pushchairs as they accompany adults through the day,in highchairs, walkers, car seats and playpens. In recent years even the adults caring for them have lower levels of physical fitness and are less knowledgable about the importance of movement.

Consequently many children entering pre-school show a lack of awareness about what their bodies can do, have diminished control of arms, legs and fingers and have need for gross motor skills development.

In both Village and Our Time movement plays a vital role in our learning; take a look at our photo gallery to observe some of our Kindermusik children learning through movement.
